Cryptocurrency Taxes for Americans Abroad

Living abroad does not remove U.S. federal reporting for cryptocurrency transactions and digital-asset income.

Tax accuracy note: This is general educational information. Cross-border tax treatment depends on facts, dates, elections, ownership, residence, treaties and the exact forms involved.

The U.S. tax angle

Sales and exchanges can create gain or loss.

Crypto received for services can be business or wage income.

Foreign exchanges do not automatically make the activity foreign-exempt.

Income earned abroad still belongs in the U.S. filing conversation. The key questions are what kind of income it is, where the work was performed, and which foreign taxes or social-security contributions relate to it.

How to approach the filing

  1. Export transaction history.
  2. Reconstruct basis.
  3. Separate investing from compensation.
  4. Review foreign account or entity implications.

A practical approach is to reconcile the foreign statement to the U.S. return line by line, then deal with double taxation. That prevents the credit or exclusion from masking an income item that was never reported correctly.

Where expats get caught out

  • Counting only cash withdrawals as taxable events.
  • Losing basis records.
  • Assuming exchange location controls U.S. taxability.

Do not assume that the way income is described abroad determines where it lands on a U.S. return. The underlying activity matters more than the label.

Documents worth keeping

Keep gross income records, not just bank deposits. Save foreign payslips, invoices, tax assessments, expense records and proof of taxes actually paid or withheld.

Store foreign tax assessments separately from payroll statements so the amount and timing of foreign income tax can be matched to any U.S. credit claim.

When this becomes a specialist job

Professional help is worth considering when the income crosses several categories, when payroll and local tax do not line up with U.S. treatment, or when self-employment and social-security rules overlap.
