U.S. Taxes for Remote Workers Abroad

Remote employees abroad can face U.S. worldwide-income reporting, foreign-country tax and payroll issues at the same time.

Tax accuracy note: This is general educational information. Cross-border tax treatment depends on facts, dates, elections, ownership, residence, treaties and the exact forms involved.

The U.S. tax angle

Where services are physically performed can matter for sourcing.

A U.S. employer does not automatically remove foreign-country obligations.

Travel days can affect FEIE qualification and local tax residence.

Income earned abroad still belongs in the U.S. filing conversation. The key questions are what kind of income it is, where the work was performed, and which foreign taxes or social-security contributions relate to it.

Work through it in this order

  1. Track workdays by country.
  2. Review employer payroll.
  3. Check FEIE and FTC eligibility.
  4. Separate income-tax and social-security analysis.

First establish gross income and expenses under U.S. rules. Then decide whether FEIE, FTC, a treaty or a totalization agreement changes the result.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Equating remote work with self-employment.
  • Ignoring U.S. workdays.
  • Assuming employer location determines every tax rule.

Do not assume that the way income is described abroad determines where it lands on a U.S. return. The underlying activity matters more than the label.

Records that make filing easier

Retain the documents that let you reconcile local taxable income to U.S. taxable income, including employer benefits, reimbursements and business expenses.

Store foreign tax assessments separately from payroll statements so the amount and timing of foreign income tax can be matched to any U.S. credit claim.

When this becomes a specialist job

Consider professional preparation when a simple income item turns into several issues at once—for example, foreign wages plus stock compensation, pension income plus treaty analysis, or self-employment plus a foreign company.
