Three ways expats typically file

Full-service preparation is the closest fit for people who want a professional to prepare the return and who may have international forms that require judgment or entity-level information. Software-led filing can cost less when the return is straightforward and the taxpayer is comfortable answering detailed tax questions. Hybrid services combine guided software with review or advisor access.

The correct service model depends on more than income level. A salaried employee with one foreign bank account has a different compliance profile from a freelancer using a foreign company, an investor holding non-U.S. mutual funds, or someone catching up several years of returns and FBARs. Those differences can determine whether low-cost software is efficient or whether specialist preparation reduces the risk of overlooking an information return.

How to compare a quote

Ask whether the price includes the federal return, Form 2555 or Form 1116, FBAR, Form 8938, state filing, amendments and the international forms your ownership structure requires. Published starting prices are useful for orientation, but the complete form set is the better comparison unit.
