How Taxes for Expats Works: TFX Process Step by Step

TFX uses an online workflow for scoping, document collection, professional preparation, review and filing. Here's what a new client can expect in 2026.

Tax accuracy note: This is general educational information, not individualized tax advice. Rules can turn on residence, filing status, income, account types, treaties, and entity ownership.

1. Create an account and get scope

TFX says new clients signing up after September 24, 2026 begin with a short questionnaire designed to produce a quote and scope before the full tax questionnaire. This can help surface whether your filing needs extras such as FBAR, FATCA, state returns, business forms, or prior-year work.

2. Complete the tax questionnaire and upload documents

After the engagement is accepted, you complete the detailed questionnaire and upload supporting documents through the provider's secure system. The exact document list depends on wages, investments, self-employment, pensions, foreign accounts and entities.

3. Preparation and review

TFX describes its service as CPA-led and says standard returns are generally prepared within about 15 business days after required information is submitted. Complex international forms or multiple years can extend the timeline.

4. Review, approve and file

Once the return is ready, you review the prepared documents, verify personal details, ask for corrections if needed and approve the return. Filing method can vary based on the forms involved and e-file eligibility.

Before you start

  • Gather prior U.S. returns if available.
  • List foreign financial accounts and peak balances if FBAR may apply.
  • Collect foreign tax statements and proof of taxes paid or accrued.
  • Identify foreign companies, partnerships, trusts, pensions and funds before assuming a simple-return price applies.
