U.S. Expat Tax Deadlines for 2026

A plain-English overview for Americans abroad, built from current IRS guidance. Use it to understand the issue before deciding whether to self-file or hire specialist help.

Tax accuracy note: This is general educational information, not individualized tax advice. Rules can turn on residence, filing status, income, account types, treaties, and entity ownership.

April 15, 2026

The regular filing deadline for a 2025 calendar-year individual federal return is April 15, 2026. Interest on unpaid tax can begin from the regular due date even when an extension gives more time to file.

June 15, 2026 automatic extension

Qualifying U.S. citizens and resident aliens who are living and working abroad on the regular due date generally receive an automatic two-month extension to June 15, 2026. The IRS instructs taxpayers using this extension to attach a statement explaining which qualifying condition applies.

Additional extension to October

If you need more time beyond the automatic two months, you can generally request the additional extension with Form 4868 by the June deadline. An extension to file is not the same as an extension to pay.

FBAR timing

FBAR has its own filing framework. Verify the current FinCEN/IRS instructions for the filing year, especially if you are correcting or filing late.
